Chapter 19

The waitress chose that exact moment to bring their entrees to the table. Avery focused on adjusting the napkin in her lap, glad she'd been interrupted before the nasty comment on the tip of her tongue had slipped out. She didn't want to be the kind of person who made belittling jokes at someone else's expense. Even if that someone was Chelsea.

As soon as the waitress left, Alex leaned close to Chelsea and said something too low to overhear. It must have been good, though, because Chelsea's smile vanished. Her brow furrowed and her eyes flashed with anger.

Alex straightened.

Chelsea took a sip of her soda–diet, of course–and fixed her gaze on Avery. With the fakest of fake smiles, she said, "I am so sorry for teasing you about being freakishly tall."

"Chelsea!" Alex's tone was exasperation and anger.

Jack's arm came to rest on her back, a show of support.

"You know what, I'm sorry." Alex's hand came across the table to squeeze Avery's. "This was a huge mistake." He lifted his arm to get the waitress's attention. When she came over, he said, "Could we get some to go boxes, please?"

"Sure thing, is everything okay?"

"Yeah. Thanks."

Chelsea glared. "I'm not eating my dinner out of a Styrofoam container."

"Then don't eat." Alex met her glare with one of his own.

Her eyes widened in surprise, then narrowed. "What?"

The waitress came back with to go containers for everyone.

Jack leaned over to Avery's ear. "Let's stay here. Doesn't make sense for us to all go back to the house at the same time and continue this."

"Excellent point." Avery completely agreed with Jack's assessment. She watched Alex and Chelsea box up their meals and get up to leave.

Alex hesitated, looking at Avery. "We'll talk later, okay?"

"Sure." She didn't want to admit how much it stung that he was leaving, even though it was probably the best of the current options. At least he seemed reluctant.

She watched Alex walk out, following Chelsea's swinging hips. "Seriously? They were together four years? I can barely stand her for four minutes."

Jack said, "She's not usually this bad." He dipped a chicken wing in ranch dressing and gnawed the meat off the bone. Around the mouthful of chicken, he added, "Bet she expected to come in and have Alex fall all over her, and you're here, so she's crazy jealous. He's such a steady one-woman man that she probably figured he was still mooning over her. Never thought he'd move on."

Had he? He'd seemed a little wistful when they were talking about past relationships on their way down the road. She ate her wings and used the wet wipe to clean barbecue sauce off her fingers.

"Wings were pretty good," Jack said, washing them down with a swig of soda.

"Yeah. Would have been better hot, though." The drama had taken too long and the food cooled down.

"Agreed."

The waitress cleared their empty plates. "Dessert?"

Before Avery could answer, Jack said, "Yes. I want a set of shooters."

"What are they?" Avery assumed it was something alcoholic.

The waitress gave her a big smile.
